To paraphrase that old 70’s song. Communication is the ANSWER to the problem. And the folks that make up the Communications Workers of America – Local 1088 showed up and showed us exactly what that means!! Driven by compassion and understanding of the problems facing the furloughed federal workers during the recent government shut down, the rank and file of CWA Local 1088 organized a 3 day food drive that yielded 3 overflowing cars and an equally packed to the brim truck with so many of the most wanted items on the Lacey Food Bank Wish List…..pasta and soups and veggies and peanut butter and cereals and tuna and so much more. Even the family pet was remembered as I spied more than a few cans and bags of cat and dog food! With our receiving table piled high with groceries, these stalwart friends rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to help the storekeepers move the donations to the distribution area where they will be shared with the families we serve and provide for here in Lacey. The Lacey Food Bank waived it’s eligibility guidelines for furloughed government workers during the shutdown and we will continue to monitor this situation and respond accordingly. Our sincere thanks to Steve Hernandez, Lynn Gardner Talarico, Debe Simpson, Pat Self, Eileen McCarthy, Courtney Lutz, Sharon Vogel, Maribel Mojica, and Michelle Salecki and everyone at CWA 1088 who organized, shopped, participated and contributed to the CWA Strong Food Drive. Your efforts will make a difference to so many! ~ Laura Caroccia
